“Then why did you kiss me?” She looked away from him in an attempt to hide her emotions. No matter his answer, she doubted her wounds would disappear. Not after he had admitted he did not want her. And why should he? It wasn’t as if Alexa could ever compare to her.
He scowled and turned his attention to the pond. “Your hair seemed to come alive in the firelight, and I could not help but touch it.”
She waited for him to continue, but when he did not, she bristled. “First, you blame spirits, and then, you blame my hair. Why do you not take accountability for your actions?” The sun’s rays beat down without mercy. She shivered, despite the warmth of the day.
At her words, his gaze went to hers. He eyed her and took a predatory step toward her. She sensed she had pushed him too far as his voice dropped to a deep, scratchy whisper. “You wish to know why I kissed you? How about because I wanted to?”
Everything fell away, lost to the brute force of his energy. This response was most unexpected.
“There is no other reason than my desire for you.” His eyes clouded, and she shivered again. He turned his head from her and said, “I am supposed to be the consummate gentleman, yet I could not resist the one I swore to watch over and protect.”
She parted her lips, and his eyes went to them. His normally light-hearted mien held a harsh note, a devilishly uncaring one that made Alexa shudder in anticipation. “I have a great many duties, you know. You are not the only person to rely on me, yet you are the only one I failed.” He cursed and took one more step to her, coming nearly toe to toe with her. “It is shameful, but dammit, I want to do it again.”
