5 Second Reviews

I have decided to start a new feature on here called 5 Second Reviews. There are tons of books that I read but simply don’t have a lot to say about for whatever reason.  That being said, I still have some opinion about them and thought to collect those opinions into larger posts rather than each review taking their post.

While Nothing New is nothing new in terms of plot and subject, my feelings on the short certainly are. The characters had depth as well as development that drove the story. What really makes this story is the characters’ chemistry and interactions. The author knows how to write dialogue as well as a solid story. I was surprised with how quickly I was taken in. Not only that but thoroughly enjoying myself. Which is rare when it comes to contemporary romance…

Reluctant Mate (Cascadia Wolves #0.5) by Lauren Dane
Paranormal Romance

This novella was such a disappointment. Historically, I have enjoyed Lauren Dane as she knows how to write erotic scenes. Unfortunately, that’s the only reason this story received as high of a rating as it did. The characters were shallow and the story was underdeveloped. I felt the author wrote just enough development to get to the sex scenes, and the lack of interest shows. Not too mention the novel has multiple writing tropes that I loathe: the pushy “best friend,” the one true mate plot device, and the sex being so good the female doesn’t care anymore.

I was sorely disappointed. If you wanted to write raunchy sex scenes, then write them. Don’t hide behind poor plot devices to excuse it. Say it with me: consenting adults are allowed to have sex!

I wanted to like this novel since childhood friends/ friends to lovers stories are my absolute favorite. However, this just didn’t do it for me. I didn’t enjoy either of the characters, the story was cliché right from the get go, and the storyline was kind of a mess. The erotica scenes were actually pretty steamy and the main characters did seem to have chemistry inside of the bedroom, but that was about it especially since the characters were a mess. I was sorely disappointed by this novel overall.

Frostbitten by Charlotte Stein
Paranormal Menage Erotica

Have you ever read something and then immediately thought to yourself “wtf did I just read?’ That is the best way I can describe Forstbitten. Half of the time I wasn’t sure what was even going on. The writing was so bizarre, vague, and all over the place, I am still trying to find the plot. I thought the erotic scenes could save it, but those were a mess as well. Everything about this book made it sound enticing. However, the execution was so poorly done, I am left wondering what drugs the author was on when she wrote it and would I understand it if I took them too?

The Southern Gentleman: Protective Instinct ( Dominant Heroes Collection #1) by Sweden Reese
Contemporary Romance

I usually don’t read these type of romance, read: political romances. However, there was so much suspense and the plot was interesting enough. Normally I would be angry about a novel leaving on such a cliffhanger, but since I already had book 2, I immediately went into the second part. Be warned though, don’t start this novel without getting the second at the same time. I will be highly annoyed otherwise and will miss out in a good story.

I enjoyed the light dom/sub undertones although I wish I had known “southern gentleman” stood sexist alpha male. At some point, it’s just too much.

All in all, it was a an enjoyable suspenseful read.

Was definitely not ready for the emotional roller coaster ride that was this novel. I should have known, being fairly warned by the synopsis. However, the drama starts from page one and doesn’t let up until the very end. That being said, it was a well-developed and love story filled with growth and healing.

Honestly I avoid such intensely emotional reads. While it had a good story line and characters, it was too emotionally taxing to read and enjoy.

That’s all I have for now. Hopefully, in the future I will have less negative reviews for you.
