Review: Daddy Issues (The Institute #1) by Evangeline Anderson

Can Kink heal a Broken Heart?

Detective Andi Sugarbaker is going to find out…the hard way.

Searching for the source of the deadly new date rape drug, Please, Andi and her partner, Viktor Saltanov, must go undercover at the infamous Age Play resort, called simply The Institute.

Here at The Institute, time is rolled back and Andi finds herself forced to relive painful trauma from her past in order to pursue her case. Meanwhile, her partner is showing a whole new side of himself that Andi never dreamed existed.

Born and bred in Mother Russia, Viktor Saltanov is 6’5, muscular, and as stoic as they come. But now he has become Andi’s sole support, protector…and disciplinarian. Letting her partner spank her and touch her in ways she never dreamed of is slowly breaking down Andi’s defenses, taking her to a vulnerable place inside she’s been trying to suppress for years.

Can the two of them navigate the traitorous maze of lies and deception and find a deeper truth about themselves? Or will their experience at The Institute destroy their relationship forever?

I had a love hate relationship with this novel.

On one hand, I liked the stereotypical female with small dog syndrome paired up with a stoically dangerous man who dwarves her. What can I say, it’s a trope I like.

On the other hand, the female lead is an idiot. If she were a real cop/detective, she would not only be the laughingstock of her division rather than garnering respect, she would be out of job for being absolute garbage at it. She is so bad at it that it would be laughable if she wasn’t so arrogant.

What I really appreciated about this novel, however, was its portrayal of the Daddy dom/little girl aspect of this story. Very few have described the fetish in such a positive light or with such accuracy. There is this lovely little section where the couple is working with a psychologist and he describes it just…absolutely perfectly. The scenes that follow are a mix of erotica exploration and self-discovery.

If you are looking for a read that delves into the BDSM community beyond vanilla bondage and spanking, then look no further. I wish the kink and the female lead getting over her hang ups about it wasn’t the focus of the story but at this point, I will take any “BDSM” I can get that isn’t handcuffs and open palmed spanking.
