Cloud 9 is a feature I do twice a month. It is my version of those “Top 10” posts you see floating around the blogosphere. Instead of ten items, there are, of course, nine.
We are all fans of something. Most of you reading this are fans of reading. However, sometimes the fandom can ruin what we love for us. These are my top 9 fandoms to avoid if you want to keep your sanity and peace of mind.
I feel like this one should a be a little self explanatory, but it’s really not if you have never tried to enjoy Doctor Who. I am sad to say that the fans of Doctor Who destroyed any enjoyment I could have gotten out of the show long before I really even had a chance to watch. Guess I should have stayed off of Tumblr before trying to watch it.
Kpop is something very near and dear to my heart. It has gotten me through a lot. However, the fans are enough to make you want to pull your hair out. To say many are a little…trying is putting it lightly. If you don’t believe me, go to YouTube and read the comments for any Kpop video. Better yet, don’t read the comments but listen to the uplifting music. In fact, listen to this simple yet catchy song by MBLAQ.
I am going to get so much hell for this one, no pun intended. Overall, Supernatural was entertaining despite the many glaring problems with it. Again, I should have stayed off of Tumblr. I could have enjoyed the show much more without the visualizations the fandom put in my head…
Video Games (if you’re female)
I am just going to let this one speak for itself. Actually, I won’t. This needs to change. I don’t know when video games became a “male dominated” industry, but a girl can only deal with so much misogyny before she snaps.
Apparently there is some unwritten yet understood rule that it is impossible to be fans of both Marvel and DC. It is an ugly ugly never-ending battle in which both sides try to argue why the other one company is inferior to their own. Personally, I think both sides have their pros and cons. Unfortunately, liking more than one things is just…unheard of.
Honorable mention: Batman
This is an odd one to talk about because nearly everyone is a Batman fan. You barely go a day without seeing someone wearing a Batman shirt of some kind. However, there are those “true fans” that like to ruin him for the rest of us instead of simply letting enjoy the popular anti-hero.
While we’re talking about wars, let’s talk about the console war which is just as ridiculous. I personally like PlayStation better than Xbox. However, I will never begrudge or down someone because they like Xbox better than PS. It’s a petty, childish thing to do. Let them enjoy whatever console they want.
I probably should have just titled this one as MMOs/Tabletops, but I wanted to specifically bring up these up games for a reason. These fandoms are some of the most ruthless I have ever seen. Don’t let them see you sweat or they will be out for blood!
I am not an Apple person, nor will I ever be. And I am not saying that because I am a poor college student who can’t justify spending that amount of money on a laptop. I don’t hate the products nor do I think less of them. However, most Apple fans make me want to punch the nearest wall. I have never met someone who simply said “Oh you don’t like Apple? That’s cool.” It’s usually a “Well let me tell you why you’re wrong and Apple is the best.” I know not everyone is like that but when you meet enough of them, you just keep you preferences to yourself.
This is another odd one to bring up, especially for you parents reading this. A year ago, I wouldn’t have even thought about it. Tumblr strikes again, though, and has repeatedly pointed out to me so many things severely wrong with the franchise that I can’t unsee them. It has come to the point that I can’t even enjoy a Disney movie without feeling guilty for it.
I apologize for the less than upbeat post which I felt ended up more negative than it meant to be. Has anyone ever ruined something for you?
